About Me
Physiotherapy for your pelvic floor might sound strange as many people don’t even know what, or where, the pelvic floor is. The pelvic floor consists of pelvic floor muscles and ligaments which help support the pelvic organs and control contraction and relaxation during basic human functions such as urination, defecation, child birth, intercourse and even provides support during exercise.
Pain or problems involving the pelvic floor can be difficult and embarrassing to talk about- but it shouldn’t be! This is all due to many years of stigmatization, poor awareness and society deeming it inappropriate to speak about issues “down there”. As a result of this many women (and men) suffer in silence from issues involving the pelvic floor, issues such as urinary incontinence, vaginismus, vulva/vaginal pain, pelvic pain, prolapse, sexual dysfunction and pain or constipation just to name a few. These symptoms can occur whether or not you have been pregnant and birthed a baby, and some pelvic floor symptoms come on with menopause. Pelvic floor conditions can have a big impact on your quality of life and self-esteem.
My aim is to make people, especially women, more aware of their pelvic floor and issues relating to it in order to help them gain knowledge about treatment options available as these are all conditions that are treatable by pelvic floor physiotherapists. It is time to ENCOURAGE women to speak up and to EDUCATE people about the pelvic floor and how Physiotherapy can help.
So, let’s EMPOWER women to connect with their pelvic floor and to love their anatomy, because where is the fun in not being able to play with your kids due to leaking or missing out on a great intimate life with your partner due to fear of pain?
Please feel free to get in contact with me. My name is Liza van Rooyen and I am a practising physiotherapist in the east of Pretoria with a special interest in treating the pelvic floor and women’s health conditions. I would love to help you on your journey to a pain free, better and happy quality of life.
